Announcing a New E-Book for Middle Grade Readers

It's summer, and ten-year-old Zoey Zoolander moves with her mother to a small-town Army Base after her father is redeployed to Afghanistan. She's lonely at first, but with her newly adopted cat (named General Grant) at her side, she befriends a group of quirky locals and military kids, eventually bringing her closer to her mother and the truth about her father who has been stationed overseas since she was three.

Told in Zoey's sensitive, believable voice, this warm and winning book features an unforgettable cast of characters, including a paralyzed Vietnam War veteran who trains military dogs as a hobby; gossipy eleven-year old twins who publish their own Army Brats New Magazine, and a painfully shy nine-year old boy whose overprotective agoraphobic mother makes him stay inside all day "to protect him from the tragedies of the past."

With its hint of magical realism and subtle illumination of such universal themes as loneliness and loss and the heavy emotional costs of war, ZOEY ZOOLANDER AND GENERAL GRANT will appeal to readers ages 9-12, who will connect with Zoey's love for her pet and her innocent, free-spirited efforts to make friends and heal a community.
